Salve! I am Titus Vulpis Dominicus aka Andy Volpe. I am currently the Tesserarius of the Centura (Century) From what we know, the Tesserarius was responsible for the Guard detail for the fortress gates. The name means "keeper of the watchword/password", which was a small wooden tile (hence, "Tessera" - tile) or pottery shards with some word or phrase written on it. These were handed to soldiers on Guard detail to inform anyone leaving the camp what the password was. If you tried to enter the fort and did not know the password, you didn't get in! It is also theorized that the Tesserarius may have also been responsible for keeping attendance of the Century -- who was where, doing what, and for how long. My Roman name is Latinized from my late Grandfather, Dominic Volpe, who fought in the Pacific in World War II (US Army) to honor him. Vulpius is from Vulpes, which is Latin for Fox. Volpe is Italian for Fox. I have been giving public programs on the Roman Legionary since 2002. I have given several programs at Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA; and I have been giving demonstrations to schools, colleges, institutions and libraries witnessed by hundreds since 2003. I also portray a Miles gregarious (regular soldier), and also have a Late Republican (c. 50-20 BC/BCE) period impression.
