UNIT HISTORY:

Organized in 31BC, by Marc Antony,  Legio III was sent to North Africa to bring that area under control of Rome. 

Following a successful campaign, it was awarded the title "Cyrenaica". 

Emperor Augustus assigned  Legio III "Cyrenaica" to garrison Egypt and it was stationed at Thebes on the Nile River..  Transferred to Alexandria in AD9, it shared a two Legion Fortress with Legio XXII "Deiotariana".

In the years AD25-26, several Cohorts of Legio III "Cyrenaica", under the Command of Aelius Gallus, Prefect of Egypt, took part in operations in Arabia Felix .  During that campaign, Nubians attacked Southern Egypt and the Remaining Cohorts of Legio III "Cyrenaica" and all of Legio XXII "Deiotariana" marched up the Nile and captured the Nubian City of Napata, successfully pacifying all Egypt..

In AD39, several Cohorts of  Legio III "Cyrenaica" were sent to Tongeren, in Gallia Belgica, for Caligula's abortive Invasion of Britain.    Cohorts of Legio III "Cyrenaica" were  also active on the Parthian Frontier in AD63 under the Command of Domitius Corbulo.

During the Jewish Rebellion of AD66-70, Legio III "Cyrenaica" and Legio XXII "Deiotariana" fought against Jewish Rebels in Alexandria.   Several Cohorts of Legio III "Cyrenaica, after the success in Alexandria, were dispatched to take part in the siege of Jerusalem. In AD70. After a short occupation, Legios III and XXII returned to Alexandria.

In AD76, Three Cohorts of Legio III "Cyrenaica", along with two Auxilia Cohorts (II Nabataea and IV Menapia) were dispatched to the Province  of Nova Britannia to augment Legio VIIII "Triumphalis", after a mutiny. 

Arriving early in AD77, The Vexillation, after quelling the revolt, was assigned with defending the Eastern coastline and interior of  the Diocese of Connecticut, all of the Diocese of Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts, as well.
